More Causes of Baldness

What are the causes of baldness? This question has troubled man for hundreds of years. In ancient times in Rome, it was believed baldness was caused by deficiency of acidity; and probably for this reason, animal urine was used as a remedy for baldness. And not many years ago, electric shocks were used with the idea that lack of flow of blood was to be blamed for baldness. The fact is that we can actually blame our parents for our baldness or hair thinning.

Heredity, Aging and Hormones

Baldness or hair thinning is associated with heredity, aging and testosterone. It happens as a result of a combination of hormones and genetics, over which we have very poor control. Though researches are being carried out to identify the genes to be blamed for baldness, the development of baldness is still a deep mystery.

Androgen is one of the many hormones that controls the emergence and development of masculine features such as testosterone. The same hormone is also produced by ovaries and adrenal glands in women. Genetic (inheriting the genes from either of the parents), when combined with Androgen and age, starts a time clock which signals the hair follicle to produce an enzyme called alpha reductase. The hair follicle receptors are sensitive to this enzyme and initiate the process of male or female pattern baldness.

Some other causes of baldness or hair thinning

Excessive use of shampoos and practices like blow-drying etc.

Physical or mental stress

Ringworm of the scalp

Change in hormones (e.g. child delivery, thyroid diseases, menopause, use of birth control tablets etc.)

Serious illness (tumor of ovary) or very high fever

Therapies like cancer chemotherapy, radiation or burn therapy

Practices like hair pulling continuously or rubbing of scalp

Immune disorder

A major illness or surgery

Under-active or overactive thyroid gland

Imbalance in hormones

Fungal infection on the scalp

Diseases like lupus or diabetes

Improper handling of hair like tight pigtails, use of tight rollers

Chemicals used in perming of hair or very hot oil hair treatments may result in inflammation of the hair follicle, which further result in scarring and hair loss.

At times, baldness or hair loss could be any early warning of a disease, so it is imperative to know the cause to treat it early.
